Chapter 32

“What are you digging holes for?” Zandra is confused and I’m loving every moment.

“You will see. Hand me that bowl please.”

“You’re so weird. Wait! Oh my goodness what are you putting a worm in that bowl for?” She shrieks when I do it.

“It is bait.” She’s thoroughly confused now.

“What do you mean it is bait? And why are you still digging?”

“I need to find more.”

“Oh my goodness do you mean we are putting those live things on the hooks?”

“Yep.” I smile knowing full well she’s about to lose it.

“You have got to be kidding me! I’m not touching one of those crawly and slimy things!” She’s turning a little green now and I cannot help but laugh.

“You told me you were not as pampered as I thought and could bait your own hook.” I raise an eyebrow.

“That was when I thought we were using those pre-made things you buy in the store!”

“Nope. In the wilderness you use worms.” I’m loving this a little too much.

“Well you’re on your own then. I will work on the house while you go be a wilderness man.” She huffs and walks off stomping a little harder with each step.

“Oh come on Zan. I will bait it for you. I was only messing with you.” I yell after her but she ignores me. Okay, I pushed her a little too far.

I cannot believe he actually expected me to touch one of those things. And to stab it with a hook too? No way. He knew all along how I was going to react. Oh, that’s what the look was for every time we talked about fishing.

“That little devil! I will make him pay for that!”

I wait inside until I see Carter’s on the dock crouched down probably killing that poor worm. He’s oblivious to anything around him so I start towards him as quiet as a mouse. One more step and I’m right behind him and reaching forward to shove him in the water.

Just as I’m pushing on his back he also reaches behind and connects with my wrist also taking me into the river.

“Oh my goodness this water is so cold!” I yell once I come up to the surface.

“You thought you were being sneaky didn’t you?” He laughs and shakes his head like a dog.

“How in the world did you know I was coming? I was so quiet!”

“Honey I knew something was coming I heard the screen door squeak and the dock moved a bit when you stepped onto it. So I listened to your footsteps. It was actually luck that I caught your arm.”

“Luck? Yuck! I’m in this disgusting water with God only knows what swimming around me!”

Wow She’s even more disgusted than she was about the worms.

“Watch out for the biting.”

“THE WHAT?” She yells completely panicked.

“Some of the fish like to nibble.”

Before I can finish the sentence she has started flailing her arms and trying desperately to get out of the river.

“I hate you Carter!” She yells and runs up the bank all the way to the house.
